About Us

The American Board of Cosmetic and Esthetic Dentistry (ABCED) is an independent organization organized by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.  Cosmetic and esthetic dentistry focuses on enhancing overall smile and appearance while improving oral health and function.  The mission of the Board is to promote the advancement of cosmetic and esthetic dentistry through examination, certification, and recertification of cosmetic dentists and encourage the attainment and maintenance of Diplomate status of the ABCED.

The Board establishes the standards for candidates seeking certification of Diplomate in Cosmetic and Esthetic Dentistry through psychometrically based written, clinical, and oral examination processes.  The Board issues certificates to candidates who complete and pass all requirements for certification and maintains a public registry for certificate holders.  The Board also administers recertification for certificate holders.  The Board is guided by the criteria for recognition of dental specialty boards as established by the American Board of Dental Specialties and the American Dental Association’s Requirements for Recognition of National Certifying Boards for Dental Specialties.
